Newport guaranteed themselves first division survival but Dunvant's defeat ultimately sent them into the second division. Newport generated sustained ferocity from the start; Dunvant covered and tackled courageously but fell behind when Dean Evans failed to collect a David Rees up and under which enabled Martin Llewellyn to give Newport the lead. Richard Goodey scored another before half-time and with Martin Jones adding a penalty and conversion Newport held a 15 v 0 interval lead. Two tries in the first eight mintues after the restart through Andrew Peacock and Mark Roderick left Dunvant without a prayer. Hooker Mefin Davies and skipper Dean Evans responded with tries for Dunvant to show that their spirit was intact for their last-ditch battle against Newbridge.
