"CLUB NOTES ..."
"HERE COME THE RODNEY RISERS"
"This afternoon we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Newport R.F.C., a team which has shrugged off the relegation worries of last season to rise to the leadership challenge of the First Division. Our League match here in 1994 gave a positive indication of their improvement and they climaxed their season by winning the last League game of the season against Cardiff at the Arms Park, spoiling that club's championship celebrations. As for today, we hope to spoil any black and amber fun by claiming their unbeaten record."
"Our hard-earned but deserved victory at Newbridge last week proved to be a real cliff-hanger, showing that a game can be totally exciting, even if lacking in tries. While we look forward to the same outcome today, make it a little easier on our nerves, boys!"
"Congratulations are in the air this week as Neil Jenkins and Paul John are invited to play for the Barbarians at Newport on Tuesday 10th October. This is a richly deserved honour for them both. Coincidentally, head coach and dad Dennis John had his Barbarian 'cap' against Newport in 1976, after having played a notable part in a rare Penarth victory, 36-30, on the then traditional Good Friday annual fixture. Tommy David played for the Baa-baas that day, and the referee was - sorry to say, it was yours truly."
"Joining our ever-increasing list of Baa-baas is Greg Prosser, who played for them at Stirling County last Tuesday, when they won 57-36. Well done, Greg."
"Staying with the Baa-baas theme, members will have noticed our newly acquired squad mascot 'Baabaara' grazing peacefully behind the posts at the clubhouse end during the Ebbw Vale game. Sad to report, 'Baabaara' has been rustled and her present whereabouts are unknown, although she is believed to be somewhere between Tonyrefail and Abercynon. Any information should be passed to the Sheriff's office. A small reward will be offered."
"Returning to the playing fields from the grazing fields, the injury list of players has been joined by full back Lyndon Lewis, who twisted his knee badly in training last week and will be out for at least another ten days. Dale Mclntoch hopes to resume training in seven days, but Lee Jarvis is still in plaster and won't be back in full training for at least 14 days. Flanker Martyn Williams is back in training, but won't be fit for selection for another fortnight."
"As previously reported, the month of November will be a very busy period at Sardis Road. Members are reminded that the Pontypridd / Fiji, Wales U-21 / New Zealand U-21 and Pontypridd / Milan games will be all pay. Season tickets will NOT be valid for these matches."
