From the match programme:-

"WELCOME TO THE WERN"

"On behalf of Merthyr RFC may I welcome the chairman, committee players, and supporters of Newport RFC to the Wern for today's SWALEC cup tie. Both clubs last met on the 14th January 2006 at Rodney Parade in the then Konica Minolta Cup where Newport ran out winners 22-8 but not after an early fright by the Ironmen. Newport led at half time 12-0 from 4 penalties by outside half Daniel Griffiths. Merthyr then hit back with a try from wing Dale Keepin and game on. The Ironmen wasted some penalty chances and decided to kick for touch. Griffiths kicked a 5th penalty, before Neil Burnett kicked one for the Ironmen 15-8. Newport then sealed the game when centre Ashley Smith crashed over for a try, Griffiths converted 22-8. The Ironmen had given Premier side Newport a scare but on the day Newport just had that extra edge. We had a great welcome from the Newport Supporters that day and I hope we can return the complement today. On a sad note a great supporter of the Ironmen Lyndon Evans has recently passed away after a long illness, he will be remembered as a true gentleman and also by Newport, as he won a signed Newport jersey that day. Merthyr have also had player connections with today's visitors when the Great Dai Muddy Waters finished his playing career with the Ironmen. What a great asset he was to us as a club and to the youngsters. I hope he is watching today and we can meet in the clubhouse later. Also connected with Newport his ex player and coach Johnny Bryant, who spent several seasons with the Ironmen as a player before playing for Pontypridd and Sale, but returned to coach the club."

"On the players front we are back to full strength except for Sam Wadham who will be out for the remainder of the season. I think the season will be extended a few weeks into May with a chance to play the postponed games. This will be our 1st game since 5th December 09 due to the snow and we still need to win a few league games to be safe in the league. Full credit to our coaching staff who has managed to keep the players fit with a mixture of boxing thanks to Dowlais ABC club and also J B Sports gym work."

"Thank you to SUPAC Ltd (Chris Morgan) and also to D.W. RECRUITMENT LTD who are today's Match sponsors."

"Warm welcome to Colin Kirkhouse (Swansea) Today's match official. Can you give him total respect? (Thank you)"

"Can I ask both sets of supporters and especially young children please remain behind the barriers?"

"Enjoy a pint while you watch the game from our on site bar and also a snack or tea at our shop."

"Come 4:00pm no matter what the result lets all enjoy a pint at our new clubhouse and enjoy the home hospitality."

"Thank you"

"Enjoy the game."
