From the programme for this, Pontypool's 50th Anninversary Jubille Celebration Match:-
"PONIYPOOL'S JUBILEE GAME (by Eynon Hammett)"
"To-day Pontypool celebrate their golden jubilee and pay tribute to the legions who have laboured since fifty years ago to raise them out of nothing to their present place among the leading clubs in the country. This match is the climax of a glorious half-century and we look forward confidently to a great feast of all that is best in the handling game, provided and enjoyed in the highest spirit of sportsmanship, so that it will be worthy of the occasion and long to be remembered."
"Pontypool and their supporters are proud to welcome their old friends and respected rivals, Newport, and heartily congratulate them on their magnificent performances which have earned them a wonderful record and the Welsh championship this season. They thank them for their splendid gesture in sending their best team for this game and regret that three seasons have had to pass since their last visit."
"The earliest game between the present Pontypool club and Newport was in 1903 when the Eastern Valley side took the place of Edinburgh Wanderers who could not fulfil a fixture at Rodney Parade. They lost by a single point but won the first official meeting in 1906. The last match between the clubs was in 1948 and ended in a draw of a penalty goal each.2
"The Jubilee Dinner takes place to-night at the Drill Hall, commencing 8.0 p.m. Tickets, 10/6 each."
"JUBILEE GREETINGS."
"from SIR DAVID ROCYN JONES"
"(President, Welsh Rugby Union)"
"My first acquaintance with the Pontypool Rugby Club was in the Season 1903-4, when I became attached to the Abertillery Rugby Club as their Honorary Surgeon."
"In those days Pontypool was a leading Club of the Monmouthshire League, and the fine games they played with their League opponents, and the pleasure they gave to the spectators, was plain evidence that they were destined to become one of the leading amateur clubs in Wales."
"In one time they left the League for wider and higher circles, and to-day they are universally held to be worthy exponents of the best of Amateur Rugby amongst the clubs of the four Home Unions, not forgetting their excellence in their games at the Park with the touring teams of the Dominions."
"Many of their players attained international rank, and a few will live for ever in the annals of International Games. Jack Evans, J. P. Jones, Tuan Jones, Ponty Jones, Cliff Pritchard and Rowley Cullis stand out. Who can forget the play of Cliff Pritchard in the famous All Black Match of 1905, and the dazzling play of Jack Jones at centre threequarter in the International Matches and yet when all is said and done it is Jack Evans that stands out for graceful and rhythmic moments that satisfy the eye."
"It has not always been a successful financial process for the Club. They have had a good Committee at all times but when Mr. Rowley Meredith took over the Secretaryship there was a rather heavy debt which would have disheartened many men; but with Mr. Meredith's keen business methods, with its enthusiasm and foresight, that debt has been paid with the very comforting assurance that the Club to-day has a large credit balance."
"Yes, Pontypool is a fine Club, and the Welsh Rugby Union is very proud of it. It is fully worthy of the best fixtures in the four Home Unions and with Touring Teams."
"May it long continue to uphold the best in Monmouthshire Rugby and give its supporters and followers the pleasure and contentment that only Rugby Football can give is the sincerest wish of"
"DAVID ROCYN JONES"
"(President, Welsh Rugby Union)."
"The PRIDE of PONTYPOOL."
"By J. B. G. thomas, Rugby Correspondent of the Western Mail"
"The Pride of the noble town of Pontypool is the Rugby Club. For seventy-five[sic] years it has fostered the Game and brought much glory to the area. To-day the Club is one of the outstanding units in first-class football, and its fame as a sporting body is known throughout the four Home Countries and on the Continent."
"Whenever I visit the Club's ground, now at Pontypool Park through the wise generosity of the local Council, I enjoy the scenery and traditional rousing forward play. The amusing bird-like call of that enthusiastic spectator who encourages his favourites with "Pooler—Pooler—Pool-er," never fails to entertain visitors."
"Again there is a warm welcome awaiting any one who visits the Town, the Rugby Club or the Supporters' Club. The Rugby atmosphere is intense and knowledgable, and woe betide the man who boasts of knowing the answers, if his background rugby makeup is flimsy. They do not suffer rugby fools gladly at Pontypool!"
"The Club has produced seventeen Welsh Internationals and one for England. Their names are worthy of mention - Rees Thomas, J. P. Jones (a really great player), D. P. and Tuan Jones (the other two brothers of the famous family), Cliff Pritchard (the auburn-haired favourite), R. Lloyd, F. Andrews, Jack Evans, Cliff Richards, G. Oliver, W. Hodder, A. C. Evans, Cecil Pritchard (a grand intelligent forward), Gwyn Bayliss (a versatile player and now a sound newspaper critic), W. J. Evans (whose injury robbed him of more caps), Ray Cale (one of the best blind-side wing forwards since Jamie Clinch) and Allan Forward of this season who was unlucky to be dropped after one appearance. The England player was T. Woods."
"The Club will produce many more great players and take part in many more exciting matches. May it continue along the path of success under the guidance of its genial secretary, Rowley Meredith, and with the continued faithful following of its splendid Supporters' Club."
"YMLAEN, PONTYPOOL."
