"The Western Valley Men Show Newport How to Tackle"
"Newport's evening fixture with a combined team drawn from Llanhilleth, Crumlin, Abercarn and Risca was designed to help the valley clubs – and, indeed, it did so, for the gate was a good one – but perhaps it helped Newport more by exposing their shortcomings. In fact, the chief honours of a lively game went to the scratch side, whose forthright methods completely upset Newport's scheme of things."
"One could not wish to see better tackling than that of the whole valley threequarter line, and their covering was astonishingly effective for a scratch side. J. Crowther, and Gerry Legge (the latter the promising son of the old Newport full-back) had an inexorable grip on Bryn Williams and Bobby Owen, while both wings, J. Morgan and K. Thomas, tackled magnificently their bigger opposite numbers. Indeed, one flying tackle by Thomas of Lane, only a minute after he had been laid out in stopping the Newport wing, was a classic."
"Nor were these valley men afraid to open out the game and that they achieved no better success than Newport was not for the want of trying, Tovey and Huggett were sound at half-back, and the former's kicking was judicious and effective."
"Facing a much heavier pack, the valley forwards stood the pace splendidly, and it was no more than their due when chunky J. Davies hoodwinked Newport's half-backs and back row forwards to steal a try right under their noses. This equalised a neat try by John Lane, and the result was perfectly just."
"Below Form"
"Newport were frankly disappointing. Too often Peter Davies found himself a lone hand against these lively Valley forwards, and he will certainly need better support in future. Billy Williams, for once, had a poor game, and Roy Burnett so persistently ran across the field that his centres rarely had a real chance."
"Unexpectedly, the best Newport performance (apart from that of Peter Davies) was turned in by Price, the young full-back, who, though he made mistakes, played much more confidently than previously this season, though even he was not so effective as Rossiter."
"The teams were:"
"Newport: D. Price; J. Wills, R. D. Owen, Bryn Williams, J. Lane; R. Burnett, W. A. Williams; T. Sterry, L. Davies, E. Pryor, I. Ford, R. Bridie, R. Sheppard, P. Davies, M. Quarterly."
"Western Valley XV: D. Rossiter (Abercarn); K. Thomas (Crumlin), G. Legge (Risca), J. Crowther (Crumlin), J. Morgan (Llanhilleth); G. Tovey (Abercarn), B. Huggett (Abercarn); R. Williams (Llanhilleth), G. Bridgeman (Risca), D. Savory (Crumlin), W. Hayward (Risca), R. Bishop (Crumlin), captain, J. Davies (Abercarn), G. Downes (Abercarn), J. Coleman (Llanhilleth)."
