From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"Tonight's friendly with Bristol was a "must" after two exciting games already played. Although this match is not regarded as a "rubber" it has captured the imagination of rugby enthusiasts on both sides of the Channel. Bristol by their insistence on open play have exploited their talented back division, and the results have justified this approach to the game by paying the handsome dividend of 498 pts. scored in 28 games. They have only lost 4 and drawn 2. The County calls of Gloucester and Somerset often deplete the team. Last Saturday with 8 men in the Gloucester XV they still managed to defeat a strong Richmond team. Six of these players are in their team tonight. J. Blake who skippers the side from outside-half is a polished performer. R. Dash (a Western Valley product) their one time outside-half now occupies what is often thought of as the "last line of defence" but he scorns this reference because he loves to run with the ball and have a go on his own so initiating an attacking movement which his team mates are only too willing to carry on. In their strong pack is F. Williams at prop, D. W. Neate second row and G. Cripps in the back row who also has a reputation as an expert goal kicker."
"In the Newport team the changes necessary through injury bring in Gethin Evans and Brian Scrivens at half-back and G. Lewis in the pack. Roy Burnett is still sick so John Anderson again plays on the left wing."
"Both sides have the ability to make this a game to remember."
"The band of the 283 Field Regiment R.A. (T.A.) will provide pre-match music."
"Next Saturday evening kick-off 6.45 p.m. we play Blackhcath on this ground. This is an official fixture so members' tickets and season tickets can be used."
[Editor's note: R. Dash did not play, place taken by R. Challis]
