"FOOTBALL.- A match was played on Wednesday between 15 of the Newport club and a corresponding number of the Chepstow, on the ground of the latter. The following are the names of the teams;- Chepstow – A. Stephens, back; E. Peake and O. Mullens, three-quarter back; W. F. Webber, half back; C. Enance and H. Dewdny, quarter back; R. Hawksford, C. Mullens, H. Clarige, J. Penman, H. Gorman, D. Gorman, J. Gunning, J. Enance and L. Quinton, forwards. Newport – H. Gould, back; A. Golledge and W. Wood, three-quarter back; J. M. Wood, half back; Edwards and McDaniel, quarter back; Barnett, Robotham, L. Jones, S.E. Baynham, Leybourne, Boddington, S. Jones, R. Gould, and J. Baynham, forwards."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
