From the Monmouthshire Merlin and South Wales Advertiser of 27th October 1882:-
"FOOTBALL.- Newport v. Bridgend. - An interesting match between representatives of the above clubs took place at the Newport ground on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a large concourse of spectators. The field was in fair condition, considering the amount of rain which fell last week. Play began at 3.30, when Bridgend kicked off, rushed the ball down to the Newport line, and secured a touch in goal. The Newport men, however, soon warmed to their work, and up to half time the play was in favour of their side. But after sides had been changed, the visitors displayed better form. Several disputes took place during the game, which ended thus:- Newport - One disputed goal and three tries, one of which was objected to. Bridgend - Two disputed goals. The following were the sides:- Newport: Three-quarter backs, G. F. Harding, T. Harding, and T. B. Jones; half-backs, L. O. Jones and Searle; forwards, H. S. Lyne (captain), H. Capel, F. C. Jones, W. Young, G. Lloyd Jones, H. Briggs, L. Williams, R. Gould, E. B. Young, and H. C. B. Phillips. Bridgend: Back, J. Gregory, three-quarter backs, P. Thomas and P. Gregory; half-backs, T. Butler and C. Verity (captain); quarter backs, C. Howell and W. Morgan; forwards, Brown, Morgan, Underhill, Phillips, Stafford, Herbert, Llewellyn and Lewis."
