From the match programme:-
"NOTES."
"Our visitors from the Gnoll have been consistent performers this season. Last Monday they defeated Aberavon by 6pts. to nil. They will be all out for the double this afternoon because early in the season at Neath they ran out victors by 13pts. to 3pts. Their full-back G. Hodgson is highly rated. He has a good sense of position, and a safe pair of hands and good kicking comes easy to him. R. Waldron who was the unfortunate victim of much controversy last week will be at prop."
"Weather permitting there will be a curtain raiser to the game this afternoon. Pontypool Schoolboys will oppose Newport Schoolboys. Schoolmaster Benny Jones, the Pontypool half-back, has a protege playing at outside-half for the Eastern Valley team. J. Diamond, the Newport Captain has played for the Welsh Schoolboys this season. He is an excellent goal kicker."
"Today we are making another collection for the Broadcast to Hospitals. We must find another £70 this season, due to increased charges for relaying. Please give generously so that the service can be continued to the patients of St. Woolos, Cefn Mably and Royal Gwent."
"We are proud that we are able to field five XV's every week. We are pleased particularly with the standard in the Youth Section. There are two Youth sides, the under 16 and a half years old and the under 18 years old. The junior Youth XV only came into being this season and this was the brain-child of Bill Everson who saw the need to provide young school leavers with a chance to continue their rugby. These boys were being lost to rugby between the time of leaving school and being matured enough to play for the senior Youth. Other town and district XV's have been formed now, so matches are arranged regularly."
"The untiring efforts of the officials in charge of the Youth, who stand in open parks on Saturday afternoons deserve the highest praise. They are doing a great service to rugby without being under the spot-light. The 1st Youth have had their fair share of honours this season. E. Mogford played for the Welsh Youth against the Welsh Secondary Schools under 18 side, against France, and today will be playing against the Welsh Secondary Schools over 18 team. Six players have been chosen for the County and three have had Welsh trials. Their record reads Played 23; Won 20; Lost 2; Drawn 1. Pts. for 386, Pts. against 59. E. Mogford has scored 84pts. and B. Mitchell 62pts. On April llth they play New Tredegar in the semi-final of the Gwent Cup. Today they play the R.A.F. Locking. They have already met the R.A.F. Apprentices Great Britain and won by 38pts. to nil. The 2nd Youth have Played 15; Won 14; Drawn 1. Pts. for 250, Pts. against 43. They have two of last year's Schoolboy internationals in the side. Peter Carrie is top scorer with 12 tries (36pts.) and David Rogers 8 tries (24pts.) A new recruit has just joined the side as an inside-half. He bears a famous name, he is Will Travers the son of Bill (Bunner) Travers. This 2nd Youth XV have played 7 senior Youth teams and won each game."
"Had the game with Pontypool been played last Thursday, Ian Ford would have taken the field today making his 372nd appearance for the 1st XV, and this equalling Roy Burnett's club appearances record. He must now wait until the Devon Tour next week-end, when he will have the opportunity to pass this record."
"Congratulations to Bryn Meredith on his successful leadership against France and on his record of 33 caps which makes him the most capped Welsh forward. Yet a further honour has come to Bryn - he has been selected to tour South Africa with the "British Lions." This will be his third Lions tour, a truly magnificient performance. We are all very proud of him. Naturally we are disappointed that our other very worthy candidates have been overlooked. Monmouthshire has four representatives, all forwards and we wish Hadyn Morgan, Alun Pask (Abertillery) and David Nash (Ebbw Vale) a very successful tour."
"We wish to remind you that prompt application is necessary if you desire stand tickets for the Welsh Seven-a-Side Tournament due to played at Swansea on April 28th."
