"NOTES"
"Throughout last season Pontypool were sorely tried, being plagued with injuries to key players. They manfully battled through to the end and finished with a record that they want to forget. Enthusiasm was high at the commencement of this season, but still luck was against them. In their opening game with Cardiff they lost Clive Rowlands and Jim Jarrett, and it was not until last week that they returned to the side. In the meantime they had to makeshift in various positions, but last Saturday could well be the turning point of a long run of misfortune. They held Bridgend, the current Welsh Champions, and so far unbeaten this season, sharing 22 pts. at Pontypool Park. Fenton Coles is team captain. He has given yeoman service to the Eastern Valley side as a wing threequarter, and he played for Wales in 1960 against Scotland, Ireland and France. Clive Rowlands, as astute tactician from the base of the scrum, has not only played for Wales against England, Scotland, Ireland and France in 1963 and 1964, but also against New Zealand and against South Africa in Durban in May this year. In each of his international games he has had the honour of the captaincy, undoubtedly a great achievement and a tribute to his leadership."
"For tonight’s game Ben Jones has been selected to play full-back. His attacking ability should make him a danger man, because his instincts are to launch attacks and coming from his new position he could very well turn defence into attack. The versatile Laurie Daniels (ex. Ebbw Vale) has been picked to partner Fenton Coles. He has played in various positions this season, being equally at home as a wing, centre or outside-half, besides at times going to full-back. He is also an excellent kicker. Maurice Panter and David Husband are in the pack. Both have played for Newport. Last season we won here, under floodlight, on 16th October by 13 points to nil, and a dropped goal by Ray Cheney was just enough for us to win at the Park on 11th March by 3 points to nil. In September, this season, when Pontypool were experiencing difficulty to field a full Side, they surprised the critics by holding us, and we had a narrow victory, 14 pts. to 9 pts. Now there must be a feeling of revival after last Saturday and with returning confidence they hope tonight to prove that their record to-date of Played 12, Won 4, Drawn 1, Lost 7, with 98 pts. for and 152 pts. against, is a thing of the past in the true sense of the word."
"Newport field the XV that did duty last Saturday. Next Saturday we oppose Llanelly at Stradey Park. The Supporters’ Club are organising a trip down. Anyone interested should contact any member of the Supporters’ Club Committee. The Newport boys will appreciate your support. We are away on Saturday week at Penarth, and our next home game is with Cardiff on 14th November."
