Educated Lliswerry School. Played for Pontypool United and Youth 1981-82 and 1982-83 (captain). Won Welsh Youth cap in 1983. Joined Newport in 1984 for whom he played from 1984-85 to 1993-94. Scored 2 tries on his debut against Penarth (Won 96 v 0) in October 1984. Known to supporters as "Charlie" he captained Newport 1988-89 to1992-93 leading Newport to the First Division title in the inaugural league season and thereby promotion to the top division. Played his 250th game in December 1991. In 1990-91 played for Wales against England at Cardiff (Lost 6 v 25) and Scotland at Murrayfield (Lost 32 v 12). Played for Wales Schools U15 & U16, Youth and Wales B (captain), Barbarians (debut 1990), Crawshay's XV, Public School Wanderers, Monmouthshire.
Left Newport to play for Rumney (Cardiff) in November 1993 saying he wanted to become more involved with coaching. Player - coach with Fleur de Lys RFC 2004-05.
