Played for Newport RFC 1959-60 to 1968-69 (although out of the game for eighteen months 1962-63 to 1963-64) making his debut in September 1959 against Penarth (Won 29 v 6) at Rodney Parade after joining from Risca RFC. Educated Pontymister Secondary School, Gordon was an excellent 7's player. He was an unorthodox runner - difficult to tackle. First player to wear number 13 for Newport on September 1st 1962 in the season that saw Newport using the new numbering system (No. 1 Prop to No. 15 Full Back) as agreed by the International Rugby Board for future internationals. Played for Newport against South Africa in 1961 (Lost 0 v 3), and Australia in 1966 (Draw 3 v 3) where he was given resuscitation, after losing consciousness, by Dr. John Miles after a head injury - Australian No. 8 John O’Gormon assisted.
Played once for Wales, at centre against Scotland at Murrayfield in 1961 (Lost 3 v 0).
A policeman, he also played for Newport Police, Pontypool, Monmouthshire.
