First playing for Newport RFC in 1889-90 Fred Parfitt won 9 Welsh caps 1893-96, five of them with Newport partner Percy Phillips. He scored a try against England in January 1894. He was a member of two unbeaten Newport sides, Newport United 1890-91 and 1st XV 1891-92. Fred played for Newport through to and including the 1896-97 season.

Also played for Bath and Somerset and was subsequently an international at Bowls.

The Times of 23rd March 1953 published the following brief obituary:

"Mr. F. C. Parfitt"

"Mr. F. C. Parfitt, who played at half-back for the Newport "Invincible" Rugby team of 1891-92 died yesterday at the age of 83. He played for Wales against England in 1893 and 1894, against Scotland in 1893, 1894, 1895, and 1896, and against Ireland in 1893, 1894, and 1896. He was a member of the Welsh team which won the "triple crown" for the first time in 1893. He also played bowls for Wales, and helped them win the "triple crown" at this sport. He was at one time president of the Welsh Bowling Association."
