Gary joined Newport RFC in 1988 from Glamorgan Wanderers while studying at Glamorgan Institute, Treforest. He played mainly at outside half but also appeared in other positions behind the scrum. In season 1988-89 he scored 349pts (incl Canada tour). He played at outside half against Wayne Shelford's All Blacks in 1989 at Rodney Parade and dropped a goal and also converted Kieron Gregory's try.

Played for Haverfordwest, Glamorgan Wanderers, Welsh Students, Wales U20, Pembrokeshire and Monmouthshire. He played in British Polytechnic Cup Final in 1988. Left Newport to work in London and play for Rosslyn Park in 1992-93.
