Educated Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari, Gareth graduated out of the Pontypridd Youth set up alongside fellow future internationals Kevin Morgan and Martyn Williams.

Starred for Wales Youth in a Grand Slam season, and in a FIRA World Cup campaign. Debut for Pontypridd RFC in 1995. The following year played much of his rugby at outside half or full back, winning a senior cap for Wales, against Tonga in 1997, at full back.

The advent of regional rugby saw Gareth sign for the Celtic Warriors and then the Newport Gwent Dragons, before joining Newport in the 2009-10 season.

Newport RFC debut at fullback vs Cross Keys at Pandy Park 22nd March 2008 (Won 10 v 14)whilst still a Newport Gwent Dragons player.

Joined Pontypridd RFC for 2010-11 season.
