"Cuppers" attended Brynteg Comprehensive School. Rhys joined Newport RFC in the summer of 2005 from UWIC having played for Bridgend RFC. He has played for Welsh Presidents XV. He made a try scoring debut at Llandovery 24th September 2005 (Won 26 v 25).

Played for two seasons 2005-06 and 2006-07.
