Newport RFC has been in existence for over 130 years and in that time it has achieved many great things. However, that information is not readily available, especially online. A group of people have got together under the guidance of the Friends of Newport Rugby Trust to change all that. The aim is to create the most comprehensive knowledgebase about the History of Newport RFC on the web. This effort is completely voluntary and is expected to take many years to complete.
We have created a database capable of incorprating detail about all players, games, seasons and much more. This should make it a comprehensive oracle for everything about Newport RFC. This is a summary of what we aim to include in our database:
- Full statistics, summary reports, and pictures for all seasons.
- Full statistics, summary and photograph for all players.
- Articles written concerning Rodney Parade.
- Full match reports for all games.
Below is a count of how many games and players we have currently (11 March, 2010), and how much detail we have for each record

Here at FONR, we don't have an army of developers we can call upon to help develop and maintain the site - as you can probably well-imagine! Web-site development is costly in terms of time and money, and we simply couldn't afford to pay commercial rates - neither would we want to! The site is therefore developed on an entirely voluntary basis and this has meant we've had to be very selective in terms of our development processes, tools and in-house technical skills to bring to you what is becoming a large and exhaustive reference about Newport RFC.
The holy-grail of web-site development is the separation of pure content from the presentation -
"the worded documents from how they physically appear", if you like. The last thing we need is to
have to update masses of items when the site undergoes minor branding changes. To this end a Content Management System has been created to enable people to input as much data as possible into our database without having to learn any programming languages.
Below are a couple of screenshots of our system.
This system is now in use, and makes it easy for anyone willing to spend some time either entering new information, or updating existing records. To give you an idea of the volume of information we want in our database, here is a list of data we want for every player:
First Name(s)

Place of Birth
Date of Death

We don't expect people to spend entire summers on typing in information, and appreciate that people have jobs, family andother commitments. However, if you think you could spare the odd hour here and there, then please contact us. We are also looking for information/photographs of past players and matches that will add to the interest of the website. In fact, any type of memorabilia including programmes, tickets, jerseys, cigarette cards or interesting stories. If you think you have anything that could be used please contact FONR using the details above.
