1893-94 saw the end of Tom Graham's reign as captain and Arthur Gould took over. Matches were played against representative teams from all parts of the UK. Watsonians, champions of Scotland 1891-2-3-4, Rockcliff, Northumberland County Cup holders for 5 years, Runcorn from Cheshire, Manningham from Yorkshire, Salford and Liverpool from Lancashire, Coventry from the Midlands and Wellington from Somerset. Newport also played Oxford University, Gloucester, Cardiff (4) and Swansea (4), Llanelly and Penarth. An 'Imperial' team wearing Barbarian colours also played at Newport.
Record was: P31 W26 D2 L3 - scoring 45g and 64t to 9g and 10t. The 3 defeats were Cardiff (2) and Blackheath. Arthur Gould again headed the scorers with 17t, 1p and 7dg followed by W. G. James with 13t and Bert Dauncey 11t.
On 3rd February 1894 Wales beat Scotland at Rodney Parade by 7pts. to Nil.
