Fred Birt who had been elected captain for 1914-15 returned to lead the side in 1919-20. It was an outstanding season and Newport only suffered 2 defeats - at Swansea and Neath. They were the only side to defeat Blackheath.

In "100 Years of Newport Rugby" Jack Davis records that "Though Newport did not play as a club during the war, it should be mentioned that a great number of players assisted the Pill invincible team, under the captaincy of George Boots, during 1918-19. This team played 32 matches, won 30 and drew 2, with a score of 737 points to 45." Many of the players who had assisted the invincible Pill Harriers team returned. Jack Wetter and Walter Martin were the half-backs, Ernie Hammett and Jerry Shea at centre, and Reg Plummer, Fred Birt, Bert Morgan and Arthur Holland also in the three-quarters. Harry Uzzell, Len Attewell, Reg Edwards, Archie Bell, Neil McPherson, Jack Whitfield, Tom Jones and Percy Jones were among the forwards.

Newport were very strong and registered many big scores against Cardiff, Cambridge University, Leicester, Army and Abertillery. 36 players were used with R. Plummer (37), A. Bell (34), J. Wetter (33) and W. Radford (33) making most appearances. Reg Plummer scored 30 tries with J. Shea scoring 25.
