The 1930-31 Season

1931-32

1930-31 under captain Bill Everson was one of the most unsuccessful ever seasons for Newport RFC and yet they had two of the really great Newport players in the side - winger Jack Morley and outside half A. R. 'Dickie' Ralph. More matches were lost than ever before but bad luck and injuries played a part as did the loss of L. J. Lewis and W. C. Morgan to Rugby League.

Centre play was inconsistent and the forwards did not quite match previous seasons but Hubert Day was the outstanding hooker in Wales.

Much was left to Morley and Ralph who were the leading scorers and Charlie 'Dodger' Jerman tried hard at inside half in the absence of A. R. Tovey.

Dickie Ralph scored 16 tries and 3 dropped goals while Morley also scored 16 tries and kicked 2 conversions. Captain Bill Everson made most appearances with 41 while forward E J 'Ned' Shiner made 37 and Percy Bunce 34.

Morley also scored tries for Wales against England, Scotland and Ireland (2) and Ralph scored 2 tries against France and dropped a goal against Scotland . They both helped Wales to partially lay the Twickenham bogey by helping Wales to draw there for the first time.

3rd August saw an Athletics Meeting staged by the Club under the auspices of the Amateur Athletics Association and the National Cycling Union. Competitors were drawn from far and wide with a variety of cash prizes and trophies to be won.

In addition to individual entrants participants were drawn from Newport Athletic Club, Newport Harriers, Cardiff University Athletic Club, Roath Harriers, Splott YMCA, Bristol Athletic Club, University of North Wales, M and SLCH, Salford Harriers, Belgrave Harriers, RAF, Spillers Athletic Club, Kensington Police Athletic Club, Bristol South Cycle Club, Cardiff 100-MC, Bath Cycle Club, Liverpool NCU, Dublin Bamba CC, Port Talbot Wheelers, Bridgend Wheelers, Lovell's Athletic Club, Westbury Harriers, Spartan Ladies Athletic Club, Cwmbran Harriers, Pontypool Harriers, Usk Harriers, Sparkhill Harriers, Ashcombe Athletic Club and Salford Harriers.
