1966-67 saw David Watkins' third term as captain but right from the start Newport had problems with injuries, illness and absence of players due to international and British Lions calls.
Many young and inexperienced players were thrown into the fray not least an 18yr old fresh from Monmouth School called Keith Jarrett making his debut on a cold December's day at Ebbw Vale. He scored in all his 18 games rattling up 122pts to be top scorer and then shocked the rugby world when playing out of position at fullback he scored 19 pts for Wales against England at Cardiff Arms Park on his international debut. Newport's usual fullback John Anthony developed rapidly when relieved of the goal kicking duties and he was to prove to be a tremendous player and a future Newport captain. Another young player to develop was tough centre David Cornwall.
Cliff Williams went north to create a problem once more at scrum half which was only resolved when Welsh reserve Gwilym Treharne arrived from London Welsh. He was the 5th player to play in the problem position that season.
A major disappointment was the match vs touring Australia . It was a dour match spoiled by injuries to Newport centres Britton and Cornwall leaving Newport with 13 men. One highlight was Newport's 9 v 17 win at Cardiff. David Watkins was selected as captain and Brian Price as vice captain for Wales vs France and England .
David Watkins also set a club record of 14 drop goals from 27 games for Newport while Brian Jones' 73 pts took him to a career total of 561 pts. Stuart Watkins scored 5 tries vs Penarth while Peter Rees scored 4 tries against the Army as well as 2 hat-tricks to take his total to over 100 in 7 seasons at Newport . Newport won the Snelling Sevens for the 9th time in 14yrs beating old rivals Cardiff in the final. Bill Morris played in 45, Vic Perrins in 43 and Martin Webber in 42 matches.
Post season saw the prominence of Newport RFC within the local comunity further enhanced by being chosen as the venue for the Newport and District Sunday School Union's 'Spring Singing Festival' on Monday, 29th. May.
