1955 at Rodney Parade saw Cardiff enter the tournament for the first time and under captain Gareth Griffiths they sailed into the final without conceding a point beating Maesteg, Aberavon and Newbridge on the way. Newport were captained by Malcolm Thomas and backs Ken Jones, John Lane, Harry Morgan, Onllwyn Brace and forwards Doug Ackerman and Vic Leadbetter completed the Seven. Graham Ross, Brian Jones and Dick Sheppard were the other members of the squad but did not play. Newport moved comfortably into the final with wins over Abertillery, Llanelly and Cross Keys.
England international No 8 Vic Leadbetter had an outstanding tournament but the skills and speed of Cardiff internationals Gareth Griffihs and Gordon Wells was too much on the day and Cardiff ran out winners 8-3 scoring 2 tries and 1conversion to Newport’s 1 try.
