1958 saw the tournament at Cardiff Arms Park and a then record crowd of 20,000. Newport’s team was Ken Jones (capt), Harry Morgan, Norman Morgan, Brian Scrivens Brian Cresswell, Bryn Meredith and Glyn Davidge. Injury to scrum-half Brian Scrivens in 2nd round saw him replaced by Clive Lewis with Norman Morgan switching to scrum-half.
Newport progressed to the final with wins over Maesteg, Cardiff and Neath while Ebbw Vale beat Pontypridd, Bridgend and Penarth. In the final Bryn Meredith opened the scoring with a try and Norman Morgan converted to lead 5-0. Francis Matthews then scored and Graham Powell converted to tie the scores 5-5. Graham Powell then scored the winning try and converted it for Ebbw Vale to take the title for the first time while for Newport it was the satisfaction of reaching their 5th consecutive final.
