Select a Season

1963

In 1963 at Cardiff, Newport sought to make it 3 wins in 3 years and a total of 7 wins out of 10 tournaments. The team that season was : Byron Thomas, Brian Jones, David Watkins, Bob Prosser and Brian Price, Graham Bevan and Glyn Davidge. The only change from the previous season’s winning team being Graham Bevan for the now retired Bryn Meredith

They came up against old rivals Cardiff in the first round but there was only going to be one winner as Newport led at HT by tries from Glyn Davidge and Bob Prosser and 1c and 1p by Brian Jones. Cardiff scored a consolation converted try but Bob Prosser had already added his second try by then. Newport met Neath in the semi-final and in front of a 20,000 crowd the strong Newport contingent shouted “NEWPORT” and were countered by the “neutrals” who always seemed to bay for Newport’s blood ! Neath led 3-0 at HT due to a Dai Morris try and in the 2nd half Newport seemed to be dead and buried as Neath’s tenacity exceeded all expectations but a last minute David Watkins try and the all important Brian Jones conversion saw them into their 9th final to meet Bridgend who were making their first ever final appearance. Brian Jones opened the scoring and then converted David Watkins’ try for an 8-0 HT lead. There were no further scores and Newport ran out comfortable winners for the 7th time.

Results :
Cardiff 14-5 W (Tries : G Davidge, W Prosser 2 and B Jones 1c and 1p)
Cross Keys 13-3 W (Tries : D Watkins 2 and B Jones 2c and 1dg)
Neath 5-3 W (Try : D Watkins and B Jones 1c)
Bridgend 8-0 W (Tries : B Jones, D Watkins and B Jones 1c)
