1972 saw Newport fielding flanker Peter Williams at hooker and wing forward Geoff Evans on the wing but they avenged the previous season’s defeat by Llanelli by winning 12-4. It was the first time for 7 years that Llanelli had gone out in the first round and they missed Phil Bennett because of an injured back. However Newport went out in the next round to Neath 4-9 who had the best forward unit of the tournament in Dai Morris, Norman Rees and Wilson Lauder. Neath forced Cardiff into extra time in the S/F before losing 10-6. Cardiff then beat Bridgend 15-4 in the final with John Davies, normally a fullback winning the Everson Award while playing at scrum-half.
