In 1974 Newport reached the S/F stages before being beaten by the eventual winners Bridgend. They cruised past Maesteg in the first round and then met Cardiff in the second round. Cardiff’s normally excellent scrum-half Brynmor Williams had an off day and Newport won through to the S/F 15-12 to meet Bridgend who had beaten Pontypridd and Bristol on the way. Bridgend pipped Newport 16-12 though Newport had the best forward of the tournament in Geoff Evans. In the final Bridgend comfortably beat Swansea 30-14 with Viv Jenkins winning the Everson Award though he was run close by Bridgend’s scrum-half Alan Walters.
Result :
Maesteg 20-0 W
Cardiff 15-12 W
Bridgend 10-16 L
