1977 saw Newport reach yet another final and for the second year running they came up against old rivals Cardiff in the final. On a cold day in front of 13,000 people Newport snatched a 12-4 lead but Cardiff made it 16-16. Stuart Lane then helped set up tries for hooker Alan Phillips and wing Julian O’Brien to clinch a 24-16 victory.

John Churchill, a late replacement and who had yet to score a 1st team 15 a-side try for Newport won the Everson Award for Man of-the-Tournament despite being on the losing side in the final. He scored 10 tries in the tournament including 2 hat-tricks – one in the final.
