In 1982 Newport only managed one win in the pool rounds at Cardiff RFC ground in August – a win over near neighbours Pontypool. They narrowly lost to Aberavon 8-12 and also lost to Penarth 8-18. Swansea beat Neath 30-0 in one S/F while Ebbw Vale beat Penarth 30-4 in the other. Swansea won their first ever Snelling title with an overwhelming win of 44-6 against Ebbw Vale. Speedy hooker Jeff Herdman was outstanding for Swansea and won the Everson Award.

Gate receipts were a disappointing £3,000 which was £1,000 down on the previous year’s low and once again there was criticism of the Pool format.
