1983 saw Newport once again fall at the Pool stages when the tournament had returned to Rodney Parade, Newport. Narrow wins against Ebbw Vale and Maesteg were not enough as they lost the all important match to Newbridge 6-14. Maesteg progressed to the S/F in spite of losing to Newport by virtue of wins over Newbridge 10-4 and Ebbw Vale 18-0. They lost to Abertillery 20-12 in the S/F while Cardiff thrashed Bridgend 30-0 in the other. Cardiff easily won the final 44-6 but Abertillery’s Adrian Parry was awarded the Everson trophy.

The return to Rodney Parade was a success although the crowd was still disappointing.
