Holder’s Newport lost 6-14 to Cardiff in the first round in 1986. Cardiff then went to extra-time against Maesteg before winning 20-16 to meet Pontypool in the S/F. Meanwhile Glamorgan Wanderers had beaten Newbridge and Aberavon to meet Swansea in the other S/F. In two close S/F’s Cardiff and Glamorgan Wanderers won through to the final with 18-12 and 14-12 wins respectively. Cardiff lost 6-30 to Glamorgan Wanderers in the final who interestingly wore Newport’s Black & Amber shirts to prevent a clash of colours. Nick Ward of the Wanderers won the Everson Award.
