In 1946-47 new captain Jack Bale had many difficulties to contend with not least the fact that Swinton Rugby League signed three Newport players - wing W. E. Williams, full back D. R. Morgan and hooker Frank Osmond.
Hedley Rowland missed many matches through illness and injury and promising half back Haydn Thomas was also injured and replaced by Wynford Davies. No fewer than 58 players were used and the mainstays of a powerful pack were F. Osmond, Jack Bale, W. Jones, Ernie Coleman, R. T. Evans, Reginal Edward Blakemore, F. Morris, P. Davies and George Parsons (ex Abertillery). Behind we had Maurice Baker who had a successful season.
Only 351pts were scored and Ken Jones in his first season only scored 10 tries in 24 games due to indifferent centre play at times. Jack Bale led the appearances on 37 while Gwili Jenkins top scored with 101pts.
The range of sports played at the Newport Athletic Club grounds was further represented by a women's hockey international against Scotland on 1st March 1947.
