The 1947-48 Season
Next:
1948-49

The team of 1947-48 were capable of playing exhilarating rugby under captain Gwili Jenkins but were also capable of lapsing into mediocrity. Once again the main problem was finding a settled team and 52 players were used.

However there were some fine players and this season saw the great Malcolm Thomas and Roy Burnett launch their careers. Once again Hedley Rowland missed many matches. Tony Rees and Haydn Thomas played well enough at inside half with Jack Evans at outside half until the arrival of Roy Burnett. Once again the three-quarter play was not up to standard and Ken Jones only managed 9 tries. New forwards were back-row Doug Dando from Newbridge and 'Big Ben' Edwards but his goal kicking talents were discovered later.

Cardiff beat Newport four times in a season for the 4th time in 72 seasons. The second match at Rodney Parade drew a crowd of 22,000. The Australians were on tour and won 8 v 4 in a match which sadly ended the career of the great Australian wing Eastes who was injured tackling Ken Jones.

Gwili Jenkins who had joined Newport as a centre proved to be a sound full-back and his goal kicking saved Newport on a number of occasions. He not only led the appearances on 42 but was also top scorer on 138pts.

April 1948 saw Rodney Parade host a game between Monmouthshire Police and their visitors Paris Police.
