To make matters worse, in the course of the season Newport had 2 players sent off - second rows Len Martin and Jeff Watkins - spoiling a 20yr record. For the second season running Newport lost 17 matches but there were highlights. Peter Rees made a final 4 appearances to bring his total to 330 games in which he scored a record 157 tries. Laurie Daniel set a record of 281pts beating Keith Jarrett's previous record of 250pts set in 1968-69 and the season saw the emergence of youth outside half Keith James who was hailed as another David Watkins. Keith made his debut at 17yrs and 1day to become the youngest Newport player since rules were changed in 1950.
To add further to Newport's problems, captain John Jeffrey broke a bone in his hand and missed the last couple of months of the season.
Laurie Daniel was leading points scorer with a club record 281pts. Laurie was the leading try scorer with 15 and also led the appearances with 40 followed by prop Gary Sutton on 38 and back Paul Evans on 37.
