1912-13 under new captain Walter Martin saw Newport achieve a sensational win over the Springboks on 24th October 1912 at Rodney Parade. They were the first team to beat South Africa that season and they also took Swansea's unbeaten record and Devon Albion's ground record.
Percy Coldrick and Len Trump had gone north to Wigan and Hull Kingston Rovers respectively. Reg Edwards had gone to Canada, F. Willis suffered illness and Wilfred Onions' career ended with injury.
Walter Martin was a popular captain although sometimes his own play suffered.
33 players were used during the season with Martin playing in all 41. Ike Williams and J. Beames each played in 38. George Hirst once again was leading try scorer with 25 followed by Walter Martin with 15.
