Vince Griffiths was again elected captain for 1928-29 following his successful previous season. The season was less successful due in part to being unable to find a centre who could capitalise on the good work of the team. Newport lost the opening match at home to Abertillery 6 v 8 - the first ever victory for Abertillery.
A recovery brought successive wins over Llanelly, Cardiff, Blackheath, Leicester , Oxford University, and London Welsh. The success was not to last as the three-quarters weren't good enough although Morley and Goldsworthy did their best. Morley scored 29 tries from 35 games while Ken Watkins, almost straight from school scored 15 on the left wing. The pack as always was excellent with Harry Phillips, W. C. Morgan, Harry Peacock, Hubert Day, Ron Herrera, F. H. Dallimore and Jack Slade being the pick. Reg Hathway joined Oldham Rugby League in mid-season and another concern was the decline in gates giving a financial worry for the club.
Hubert Day (42), F H Dallimore (39), Vince Griffiths (37) and 'Dodger' Jerman (36) made most appearances.
