The 1934-35 Season

1935-36

More defections to Rugby League followed in 1934-35. Stan Mountain who was showing promise in the centre went to Huddersfield . Mel Meek, a hooker from Abertillery, deputising for John Evans, absent for business reasons, joined Halifax after just 7 games and winger Bill Johnson joined Huddersfield during the season. New captain Ned Shiner was still left with a talented team. Sid Watkins partnered Jim Hawkins at half-back and they were instrumental in producing some very attractive rugby. Walter Legge gave up the Cross Keys captaincy and became the regular and a most reliable full back. Tom Rees a big scrummager from Fleur-de-Lys joined as did Harry Morgan a wing forward from Abertillery. Shiner proved to be a popular captain. Viv Law was the most improved forward and Emms and W. G. C. Williams gave good service. Jack Williams was top try scorer with 12 and continued to give good service up to 1939.

No fewer than 11 of the 44 players used in the season were policemen : W. A. Everson, J. A. Adams, John Shiner, A. Rowe, T. J. Davies, E. J. Wright, R. C. Clayton, R. Allen, T. J. Rees, J. T. Knowles and J. Collins were or became Newport or Monmouthshire policemen. Walter Legge made most appearances with 42 followed by J. Knowles, E. Shiner and F. Emms on 38.
