John Evans was at last persuaded to take on the captaincy in 1935-36 and the progress made over the previous seasons continued resulting in Newport finishing 3rd in the Welsh Championship to Cross Keys and Llanelly. Interestingly Newport completed the double over Cross Keys and beat Llanelly at home. Sid Watkins retired but Joe Dunn proved to be an adequate successor.

The three-quarters showed much improvement over previous seasons with Albert Gear and Bob Allen proving to be an excellent centre combination. Jack Knowles was joined on the other wing by the adventurous young W. H. (Bill) Hopkin. Knowles scored 17 tries while Hopkin scored 13. Gear left for Torquay and the selectors tried Tovey at inside half in place of Hawkins who then decided to join Cross Keys. New forwards were coming through including hooker Bunner Travers (son of Twyber), J. C. Jerman, a tough forward from Risca, R. H. Williams, from Newport High School and Murrell Chatwin a very active young wing forward from Pontnewydd. These complimented the experienced Arthur Rowe, John Evans, Tom Rees and Vivian Law . Two Newport policemen E. J. Wright (ex-Plymouth) and J. C. Wright (ex-England international) also gave good service and behind the pack was the ever reliable Walter Legge.

The main match of the season was vs New Zealand which Newport lost by 1t, 1p, 1dg and 1gfm to 1 converted goal. The Easter touring Barbarians, who for 5 successive seasons had beaten all 4 Welsh sides finally lost to Cardiff and drew with Newport.

Top scorer was Jack Knowles with 17 tries and 1 dropped goal while J. C. Jerman (38), W. G. Legge (36) and J. R. Evans (36) led the appearances.
