In spite of suffering many injuries Newport had a truly successful season in 1920-21 under captain Reg Plummer. They were unbeaten up to January 1921 and then fell away as it was rarely possible to field a full strength team.
On 30th April 1921 Newport fielded a team of 15 internationals against Bristol (Won 17 v 0): 10 Welsh, 3 English, 1 Scottish and 1 Irish and still had 3 ex-Welsh internationals in reserve! Of the 15, four were international captains and four were Newport captains and 2 of the 3 reserves were ex-Newport captains also. Never in history had any club been able to field such a team.
