1955-6 proved to be a highly successful season with Newport winning the Welsh Championship by a wide margin. No fewer than 7 Newport players played in all 4 Welsh matches - Garfield Owen, Ken Jones, Malcolm Thomas, Harry Morgan, Onllwyn Brace, Bryn Meredith and Leighton Jenkins - helping Wales win the Championship. Malcolm Thomas captained Monmouthshire to the Welsh Counties Championship and Ken Jones became the most capped Home International player with 43 caps.
Garfield Owen and Onllwyn Brace only played 4 and 2 matches respectively due to college commitments but Norman Morgan proved an admirable replacement for Owen at full back and set a club record of 165pts while Colin Evans was impressive at scrum half.
Two notable newcomers were props John Phillips and Des Greenslade and these together with Meredith, Herrera, Jenkins and Ackerman formed a formidable pack.
In the backs, Malcolm Thomas, Harry Morgan, Brian Jones and John Roblin did well. Cardiff were beaten 3 times but they and the South African Universities were the only teams to win at Rodney Parade. Des Greenslade (38) and Norman Morgan (34) led the appearances and Ken Jones the try scorers with 16
