1956-7 saw Malcolm Thomas' third term as captain but the team showed a decline. Bryn Meredith joined London Welsh, Garfield Owen went north to Halifax and Doug Ackerman joined Ebbw Vale after 8 seasons with Newport.
Roy Burnett made a successful switch to the left wing replacing the retired John Lane but the outside half berth proved difficult to fill.
The forwards fared better with Greenslade, Phillips, Mervyn Hinnem (ex Abertillery), Ron Herrera, Ford, Davidge and Cresswell playing well. Roy Burnett played in 41 matches and Ian Ford in 40. Norman Morgan was once again leading scorer with 161pts and Malcolm Thomas and Ken Jones each scored 15t.
March saw what was billed as the "First Floodlit Rugby Match in Wales" played at Cross Keys' Pandy Park with a numberof Newport players in Ray Lewis' Welsh International XV.
