The 1949-50 Season
Next:
1950-51

Hedley Rowland was asked to continue as captain in 1949-50 but sadly was taken seriously ill and L. E. T. Jones took over a difficult job after Newport beset by injuries had lost 7 of their 14 games by mid-December. 'LET' proved to be an inspiring captain and led Newport to a magnificent recovery and Newport only lost 1 further game. During this period Newport, and it has to be said Cardiff, were two of the most attractive teams in the country.

Roy Burnett who missed most of the first half of the season was the star player. Bryn Williams and Bobby Owen played well at centre but wings Ken Jones, Deryck Jones and Trevor Brewer were not really given enough chances. Haydn Thomas went North after missing out on a Welsh Cap but was ably replaced by Billy Williams from Talywain. Bunner Travers decided to finally retire but Sterry and new men Lyn Davies and Geoff Hirst formed a very dependable front row. They were well supported by L. E. T. Jones, Ben Edwards, Peter Davies, R. T. Evans, Doug Dando and Doug Ackerman.

Ken Jones, R. T. Evans and Malcolm Thomas were selected for the British Lions 1950 tour to Australia.

Ben Edwards who had now taken over kicking duties was leading scorer with 29c, 8pg and 1 try while L. E. T. Jones made the most appearances and played all 42 matches.

It should be noted that Newport United lead by Roger Wade were invincible with a record of P33 W29 D4. Between them Newport and the United had the record : P75 W58 D9 L8
