A knee injury to fullback Norman Morgan on Boxing Day vs Watsonians was to prove to be the tragedy of the season. Newport then lost at Aberavon and could only manage a pointless draw at home to Cross Keys before they took on the might of the touring Springboks. A magnificent display saw them cruelly robbed of a deserved victory when replacement full-back, youngster Barry Edwards (ex-Tredegar) and captain Brian Jones missed kicks at goal.
In March, Newport gave Ebbw Vale reserve outside-half Geoff Davies a run out and never looked back and didn't lose a single game to the season end. Stalwart forward Ian Ford reached 300 appearances while Glynn Davidge and Bryn Meredith were outstanding forwards as was Brian Price who won his first Welsh cap. In the backs wing Peter Rees and centre Gordon Britton deservedly won Welsh caps. Norman Morgan only managed 15 games but for the 6th successive season was top scorer with 70pts while Peter Rees was the top try scorer with 17 tries followed by captain Brian Jones with 15 tries.
Ian Ford made the most appearances with 41 followed by Brian Cresswell with 38.
